How to Become a S.T.E.P. Consumer

To enter the STEP Program, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Reside in the greater Sacramento Area or be planning to move there in the near future.
  • Be supported by a California Regional Center and/or being transferred to the Alta California Regional Center in Sacramento (from California or otherwise).
  • Express an interest and desire to participate in the STEP Program (STEP is a voluntary program; the individual has the right to discontinue services at any time).

When a person supported by the Regional Center has decided they want to live on their own, they begin researching their options. Their regional center case manager will determine if the person qualifies for supported living services and then provides information regarding different area services for which they are eligible. If the person decides that they want to be a part of the STEP Supported Living Program, their case manager will make the referral.

A tour of the office and meetings with people who are already receiving services will then be set up. During several initial meetings with the consumer, the STEP representative will assess the individual's needs and determine if STEP can help the consumer reach their goal of living on their own.
